Wind Mast erected but no warnings to Aircraft and Birds

by Gareth Wilson on 5 April, 2015

An anemometer mast was erected on 28th March, just days before the construction start date on their planning permission ran out on 10th April. The steel lattice structure, which is higher than anything else for miles around, is a completely different design to the columnar example shown to the Planning Committee.Aldreth Mast 1

What is of major concern to the residents of Aldreth and Haddenham is the fact that the mast does not meet the planning conditions that it must be fitted with visible collision warning markers for birds and for aircraft or helicopters as recommended by the General Aviation Awareness Council and mandated by the Council. Planning permission required nine reflective orange bird diverters to be placed at 5m intervals along each of the four outer guy wires, prior to raising the mast.

There is, as a result, greatly increased risk of collisions by birds, including swans and fast flying species such as hobbies, hen harriers and sparrowhawks. Even worse is the potential risk to aircraft.

Pauline has written to Planning Enforcement officers at East Cambs District Council demanding they take action
