FOCUS ON HADDENHAM – TRAFFIC SAFETY

by admin on 16 November, 2016

Crossing needed on Hop Row

The Parish Council is pressing to get a new pedestrian crossing on Hop Row. “Lots of parents and carers and their children need to cross Hop Row to get to school, nursery, preschool and the play park,” said Pauline. Parents ignored by County Council County Highways officials say this cannot be done, as the road is too dangerous to cross!! The County Council’s Highways Department have ignored a petition signed by hundreds of anxious parents who need a safe crossing for their children. “Living near the junction, I can see how dangerous it is for everyone to cross this busy road”.

Smiley signs could help cut speeding

Gareth Wilson as the chairman of the Parish Council Road Safety working party has submitted a bid to reduce speeding in Haddenham. Pauline Wilson believes that better signs would encourage drivers to slow down. “The smiley and grumpy face signs in Sutton seem a good idea to me,” said Pauline. “We should have signs like that as people drive into Haddenham.” When Pauline gets an answer from the County, we’ll let you know.

More radical measures than informal speed sensors are needed if traffic issues are to be addressed adequately.

Witchford’s Parish Council Traffic Committee has drafted a proposal and asked the public for ideas. Perhaps Haddenham and other parishes can follow suit.

Adequate cycling provision between East Cambs villages and Cambridge is being largely avoided, for instance not addressed the East Cambs Local Plan Further Draft; as for translation from strategy to completed project, history tells us that these plans are window dressing.

I commute along the A1123 between Stretham and the Upware turnoff; there’s a plan to provide cycling facilities on this route -how will this happen? The route between Wilburton and Stretham is in a sorry state of repair; why isn’t it maintained/improved? There is no year-round/legal cycling access between Stretham and Lt Thetford and the onward shared route between Lt Thetford and Ely is not fit for purpose.

How are we going to secure a proper walking and cycling infrastructure in Soham South and Haddenham?

I totally agree that more emphasis should be placed on cyclist and pedestrians. A proper cycle route between Stretham and Little Thetford would be a good start. It would also be useful to link Haddenham with Witcham Toll, so that it would connect to the new cycle path along the A142. At the moment maintenance and improvements of cycle paths have a very low priority with the present administration.
